NWN 2: Mysteries of Westgate Update #8

The latest lore update from the Ossian Studios Team has arrived. Ossian is developing an 'adventure pack' for Neverwinter Nights 2 that is expected to be released sometime in May.

Rinara's Travel Guide

image

Ugh... when will this blasted voyage end? I don't know what makes me more ill: the motion of the ship, or all this waiting around with nothing to do. No offense, but you don't look well yourself. Are you seasick too... or does something else torment you? In any case, perhaps a little conversation will help take our minds off our troubles.

- Rinara

So... you're going to Westgate. As a former resident in poor standing, I know the city well. If you've come this far, you've probably learned a thing or two about it from sages and scholars. Unfortunately, none of that will serve you when you're floating facedown in the sewers. What all those detached observers don't tell you is that the city is as greedy, dangerous, and quirky as the unpronounceable wyrm's name upon whose lair it was founded. If you want to survive Westgate, you could use some advice from a woman who's lived in its shadow and seen how it swallows up its prey.

First place you'll become acquainted with is the Harbor Loop district. You won't be surprised to learn that the docks are one of the roughest parts of town - that's the way it is in most port cities. Of course, most cities don't have a criminal organization as powerful as the Night Masks. They like their victims fresh, so be on the lookout for street thugs when you get off the boat. Best thing you can do is try to blend in by having a drink at the Black Eye tavern. It's a good place to find work, too - or trouble, if that's your preference.

If you're looking to trade, you'll find merchants in every part of town. In fact, some of them will find you. Steer clear of shady hucksters peddling oddities from dark alleys, unless you've got an eye for merchandise or a taste for risk. Oh, there are legitimate merchants even in the Harbor Loop - like a little place called Okuzo's Imports that specializes in items from Kara-Tur. But if you're looking for strictly aboveboard dealings, the Market Triangle is the place to go. Just walk toward the Tower at the center of the district and you'll find plenty of merchants hawking their wares. If you're out for something truly unusual, stop by Mintassan's Mysteries. The wizard who runs the place is one of Westgate's most famous citizens.

If it's sport you're after, there's dog racing at a seedy little place in the Market Triangle called the Track. Of course, there's also the famous Quivering Thumb in the Arena District, so if fighting is your thing, you can sign up to get your throat cut (I hear the money is good, but I prefer less risky ventures). If by some fluke you manage to survive, you can wash away the pain at the Bent Mermaid inn nearby. It's like the Black Eye except with 10% fewer fights, owing to the fact that the City Watch and the do-gooders of Lathander also occupy the district.

I've saved the worst for last. If you're brave, unlucky, or of a certain morally flexible disposition, you may eventually find yourself in Undergate, the city's most notorious district. Undergate is far underground, reachable only by magical portals hidden throughout the city. You can imagine what sorts of creatures are drawn to such a place, and for what purposes. Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll find something to surprise you if you visit.

I'd love to continue this conversation, but I suddenly feel the overwhelming urge to empty my stomach into the Sea of Fallen Stars. Perhaps we'll talk again when we reach Westgate, which - if the gods cooperate - won't be long.
