Fallen Earth: Overview
Fallen Earth is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the Shiva plague and a nuclear holocaust have wiped out the majority of the world’s population. Only a small group in the area around the Grand Canyon live on. Players begin near the Hoover Dam in 2154 when they adventure in Fallen Earth, the new MMORPG from Icarus Studios.
The game features six distinct factions into which players to divide themselves. Each vies for control of the world and battles the others. They are:
- CHOTA: The Children of the Apocalypse are a long-standing group with savage tendencies. They are brutal and not exactly known for their inventive nature.
- Enforcers: This group represents order and hopes to rebuild society, but at the same time are extremely driven, disciplined and directed from above. They are not known for the protection of individual liberties.
- Vistas: These are the hippies of Fallen Earth. They love the Earth and hope to not only protect, but restore it to its previous glory. They include healers.
- Techs: The fall meant the loss of a lot of technology, but the Techs hope to reclaim and restore that as they studiously work to rediscover, invent and expand upon human knowledge.
- Lightbearers: What’s the future without religious fanatics anyway? These people are spiritual leaders and hope to help the world through this path.
- Travelers: This is the haven for criminals of the old world as they use cunning to power the underground.
Fallen Earth utilizes a rather liberal skill/usage-based system to power its players. Players do not need to just pick a class and stick to it like most other MMOs. Instead, they gain ability in the skill that they use. Over time, as they practice more, they become more proficient and advance. The system owes more to games like Ultima Online than World of Warcraft.
While all characters in Fallen Earth are human, the screenshots and demos to date show a rich array of post-apocalyptic style combinations. With everything from guys with spiked baseball bats and old-fashion hockey goalie masks to punks, this game hopes to make up for what it lacks in race selection with detail in that one race.
The game also features a wide array of conventional weapons (both melee and guns), a host of vehicles players can choose from, and event some limited “magic-like” abilities that came through mutations.
Fallen Earth is currently in development and no launch date has been announced.
